13 November 2004 - Launch of MoneySENSE Family Outreach by Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Minister of State for Finance and Transport (PDF, 99.9KB)
Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Minister of State for Finance and Transport, today unveiled two new MoneySENSE cartoon guides, "Are You A MoneySENSible Family?" (PDF, 4.50MB) and "The MoneySENSE Guide To Planning For Your Family's Financial Future" (PDF, 9.60MB) at the launch of the first MoneySENSE Family Outreach at the Family Festival 2004 Roadshow at Parco Bugis Junction. The two cartoon guides are aimed at making money management and financial planning matters more relevant for families. Families who are interested in obtaining the two cartoon guides can visit the MoneySENSE booth at the Family Festival exhibition to be held at Suntec City Exhibition Hall (Level 4) from 26 to 28 November 2004 or download soft copies of the guides from the MoneySENSE website at www.moneysense.gov.sg.
The MoneySENSE Family Outreach also consists of the following activities:
- "Saving For My Family" MoneySENSE Children's Art Contest;
- MoneySENSE Family Challenge; and
- MoneySENSE Financial Planning Talks

14 October 2004 - Speech by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education and Deputy Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), at the launch of Credit Counselling Singapore (CCS), 14 October 2004, 9.30 am at Meritus Mandarin Hotel
In his speech, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam talked about two ways - education and credit counselling - to help individuals make sound decisions on their financial commitments and how CCS could play a role. He said that CCS would be able to help creditors recover their monies and help consumers avoid court action and bankruptcy proceedings. CCS' education arm, Credit Education Singapore (CES) would also work to bring financial education programmes to all Singaporeans. He urged the banking community to continue to give CCS their support in helping the financially distressed so that society as a whole could continue to look forward and embrace change.
8 October 2004 - MoneySENSE and its industry partners reach out to community through MoneySENSE Family Outreach
MoneySENSE announced today that it is working with the major financial industry associations to launch a MoneySENSE Family Outreach on 13 November 2004 at Parco Bugis Junction. This partnership represents the first time that MoneySENSE is collaborating with the financial industry associations in Singapore to bring financial education to families. The MoneySENSE Family Outreach will consist of a series of fun-filled activities where families can pick up tips on how to better manage their money and take steps to develop a financial plan. MoneySENSE and its industry partners today also launched two contests for families - "Saving For My Family" MoneySENSE Children's Art Contest and "The MoneySENSE Family Challenge". 8 September 2004 - The Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), Visa International and Singapore Management University (SMU) introduce the "Practical Money Skills for Life" financial literacy education programme.

"Practical Money Skills for Life" is a 2-day workshop held from 8-9 September to train 44 teachers from various tertiary institutions including the 17 junior colleges and centralised institute, and the 6 Integrated Programme (IP) schools. The workshop will help to train teachers in the delivery of basic money management concepts to their students. The materials provided will also serve as an additional resource for teachers to tap on to educate their students.This programme is jointly organized by ABS, Visa and SMU and is the first "Train the Trainer" course supported by MoneySENSE.

In his speech (PDF, 147KB), Mr Lim Hng Kiang talked about the importance of financial planning, the current attitudes of Singaporeans towards financial matters, and efforts by the Government to raise the financial literacy of consumers through the MoneySENSE national financial education programme. He emphasized that while steps are being taken to increase the focus of financial education and improve market conduct standards among financial players, consumers also have to be more self-reliant and learn to take charge of their finances.
16 June 2004 - LIA to organise first Mandarin life insurance seminar,"Protecting Yourself With Life Insurance"

LIA and Central Singapore CDC will be organising a Mandarin seminar which will provide an introduction on the basics of life insurance and highlight the importance of life insurance in financial planning. The seminar was first held last December in English and was well-received by the public.
8 June 2004 - Speech by Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Mayor of North East Community Development Council (CDC) and MP for Aljunied GRC at the Official Launch of "Talking Dollar And Sense" Workshop
In his speech to launch the "Talking Dollar And Sense" workshop, Mr Zainul explained that the workshop was introduced to help educate residents of the North East CDC on how to better manage their finances. He noted that the workshop will help residents who are receiving financial and employment assistance to live within their means.

23 May 2004 - Opening Address by Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC at the Official Launch of MoneySENSE @ South East
In her speech, Mrs Lim highlighted the need for working adults and homemakers to start planning their finances early and practise good money management habts on a daily basis. Mrs Lim also stressed on the need for families to prioritize their daily expenses, to put aside savings for a rainy day and to be self reliant and take responsibility of their own financial well-being by learning more about cash flow, budgeting and use of credit.
22 May 2004 - Speech by Mr Heng Chee How, Mayor of Central Singapore district and MP for Jalan Besar GRC, at the inaugural Financial Planning Talk "MoneySENSE And You - Are You Making Effective Financial Decisions?"
In his speech to launch the inaugural financial planning talk, "MoneySENSE And You - Are You Making Effective Financial Decisions?", Mr Heng talked about the need for families to live within their means and invest wisely for their future to create a better life for themselves.
21 May 2004 - Launch of MoneySENSE @ South East
South East CDC will be launching MoneySENSE @ South East on Sunday, 23 May 2004 at Serangoon Garden Secondary School. Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, MP for Marine Parade GRC, and Adviser to Serangoon GROs, will be the Guest-of-Honour at the launch. The aim of MoneySENSE @ South East is to equip working adults and homemakers with basic money management and financial planning skills to self-manage their resources.
20 May 2004 - Launch of free Financial Planning Talks at the Central Singapore District
The Association of Financial Advisers (AFA), the Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS), the Insurance and Financial Practitioners Association of Singapore (IFPAS), and community organizations are jointly organizing free financial planning talks under the MoneySENSE programme. The first five talks in this series of educational talks are organized with the support of Central Singapore CDC.
28 April 2004 - Speech by MAS Assistant Managing Director (Market Conduct) Mr Shane Tregillis, at the Insurance and Financial Practitioners Association of Singapore (IFPAS) National Congress 2004
In his speech, Mr Shane Tregillis highlighted four areas in which the industry and MAS can work together to embrace change and be ready for the future. These four areas are: (i) Enhancing business conduct standards of financial advisers; (ii) Working hand-in-hand with industry participants on consumer education; (iii) Ensuring responsiveness to changes; and (iv) Exploring the benefits of convergence in the industry. In the area of consumer education, Mr Tregillis commended industry efforts to bring financial education programmes to consumers under the MoneySENSE national financial education programme.
20 February 2004 - Speech by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade & Industry, Raymond Lim, at the Edge/Lipper Singapore Unit Trust Awards 2003
In his speech, Mr Raymond Lim talked about a multi-faceted strategy to develop the asset management sector. He highlighted the following three-pronged approach: (i) Developing a complete asset management ecosystem; (ii) Widening the asset management base; and (iii) Providing opportunities for education and training. Under the third prong, he mentioned the MoneySENSE programme as one of the efforts by the Government and industry to improve the financial literacy of customers.
