HOW TO SAY "NO" TO LOAN SHARKS - Homemakers Get Tips On Managing Their Money

Singapore, 21 May 2004... Money management workshops are no longer territories just for the rich and famous.

Some 150 homemakers, amongst a crowd of 300, will be making sense of their bank accounts on 23 May 2004 at the MoneySENSE @ South East through a simple delivery of common money management issues.

Areas covered will include differentiating one's "needs" and "wants", avoiding debt traps such as the credit cards, hire purchase, loan sharks etc. Participants will also be introduced to saving tools such as the CPF Scheme and insurance policies.

MoneySENSE @ South East comprises a series of four financial education talks targeted at homemakers and working adults. These free talks will be conducted in both English and Mandarin and aim to impart basic knowledge and skills on financial planning, budgeting, and retirement planning and debt management. The highlight of the programme is a lively interactive skit "1 Man and 3 Ladies".

MoneySENSE @ South East also marks the first time that South East Community Development Council (CDC) is collaborating with Project Wings' JUMPstart programme to impart budgeting skills and financial planning know-how to non-working women. The CDC recognises that many Singaporeans, especially non-working women, are not very confident when it comes to managing their financial affairs. The aim of MoneySENSE @ South East and JUMPstart is to equip working adults and housewives with basic money management and financial planning skills so that they have the skills and confidence to self-manage their resources.

MoneySENSE @ South East will be launched on Sunday, 23 May 2004 at Serangoon Garden Secondary School. Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, MP for Marine Parade GRC, and Adviser to Serangoon GROs, will be the Guest-of-Honour at the launch.

A new MoneySENSE Map of Activities & Events on the MoneySENSE portal will be launched on 23 May 2004.  Members of the public can surf this stylised Singapore map for the latest MoneySENSE programmes held throughout the island.  The public is also invited to subscribe to the mailing list service in the MoneySENSE portal, which alerts subscribers to any new updates to the portal.

Members of the public who are interested in attending the talks can register with South East CDC 6319 8736 or 6319 9435.

Making any sense yet?
