MoneySENSE and Its Industry Partners Reach Out To Community Through MoneySENSE Family Outreach

Singapore, 8 October 2004 - MoneySENSE announced today that the major financial industry associations are coming together to launch a MoneySENSE Family Outreach on 13 November 2004. The MoneySENSE Family Outreach is held in conjunction with Family Festival 2004 . This partnership represents the first time that MoneySENSE is collaborating with the financial industry associations in Singapore to bring financial education to families.

The MoneySENSE Family Outreach takes a more light-hearted approach to financial education. Mr Shane Tregillis, Assistant Managing Director (Market Conduct Group), Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Chairman of the Financial Education Steering Committee overseeing the MoneySENSE programme said, "As attitudes towards money are cultivated at home, we are focussing our financial education efforts on the family. We are delighted that the financial community is partnering MoneySENSE to organise a whole host of fun-filled activities to share ideas on how families can better manage their finances. This is a good opportunity for families to come together to better understand basic money management, financial planning and investment issues."

The MoneySENSE Family Outreach will consist of the following activities:

  1. The Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS) is partnering eight major retail banks - ABN AMRO, Citibank, DBS Bank, HSBC, Maybank, OCBC Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and United Overseas Bank - to produce a comic book, "Are You A MoneySENSible Family". The comic book takes a light-hearted look at some of the common money management problems faced by families in Singapore. In conjunction with the launch of this comic book, ABS and the eight banks are also organising a "Saving For My Family" MoneySENSE Children's Art Contest.  This aims to encourage children to develop good money management habits from young.  Open to children aged 7 to 13, the winners stand to win attractive cash prizes totalling $1,600.

  2. The Insurance and Financial Practitioners Association of Singapore (IFPAS) and the Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA) will be jointly launching a financial planning guide, "The MoneySENSE Guide To Planning For Your Family's Financial Future". The guide provides practical tips on how families can draw up their budget and develop financial plans to take care of their needs.

  3. The Association of Financial Advisers, Singapore (AFA), the Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS) and the Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS) are jointly organising a "MoneySENSE Family Challenge" to identify Singapore's most "financially savvy" family.  Families are invited to submit a short write-up on their money management habits and how they have made plans for their long-term financial security.  Four families will be picked to vie for the title of the "2004 MoneySENSE Family" at the MoneySENSE Family Challenge to be held at the Family Festival exhibition on 27 November 2004.  The winning families stand to win attractive cash prizes totalling $3,500.

Copies of the comic book and financial planning guide will be distributed free-of-charge at the launch of the MoneySENSE Family Outreach at Parco Bugis Junction on 13 November 2004 and at the Family Festival exhibition at Suntec City Exhibition Hall (Level 4) from 26-28 November 2004.

Families who are interested in the "Saving For My Family" Children's Art Contest and MoneySENSE Family Challenge can register at the MoneySENSE website at www.moneysense.gov.sg or the Family Festival 2004 website atwww.familyfestival.com.sg.
