This is a list of the past events organized under the MoneySENSE national financial education programme. The aim of these events is to provide consumers with practical tips on how to better manage their finances, plan for their long-term financial security and invest prudently.
Central Singapore District

1) Understanding Motor Insurance (English) |
Organizers: General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) and Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE)
This was the first motor insurance seminar jointly organised by GIA and CASE on 20 August 2005 at Capital Tower to educate the public on the various types of motor insurance available in the market. The seminar also cover topics such as how motor insurance premiums are set and how to use the Singapore Accident Statement. This seminar was attended by 130 participants.

2) Understanding Health Insurance (English) |
Organizers: Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA) and General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA)
This was the first health insurance seminar jointly organised by LIA and GIA on 7 May 2005 at Grassroots Club to educate the public on the basics of health insurance. Besides an overview of the healthcare environment in Singapore, the seminar also touched on financing healthcare through Medisave and cash, and what to look out for when buying health insurance products. This seminar was very well-received, with more than 170 participants attended the event.

3) MoneySENSE and You - Are you making
effective financial decisions? (Malay) |
Organizers: Central Singapore Community Development Council (CSCDC), Syariah Court, Berita Harian, Association of Financial Advisers (AFA), Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS), and Insurance and Financial Practitioners Association of Singapore (IFPAS)
This was the first financial talk organized for the Malay community on 30 April 2005 at the Muhajirin Mosque. Mr Heng Chee How, Mayor for Central Singapore District and MP for Jalan Besar GRC, officiated the launch of the talk. Participants were taught simple steps to make effective financial decisions and received practical tips on what to look out for when dealing with financial advisers. The talk received overwhelming response, with more than 180 participants attended the session.

4) Life Insurance - Rights and Responsibilities

Organizer: Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA)
This was a lunch-time seminar on life insurance organised by LIA on 22 September 2004 at the theatrette of the Asian Civilisations Museum. The speakers at the seminar included representative from the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE). The seminar gave an introduction of the role of life insurance in personal financial planning and what consumers could expect from a financial adviser representative. It also highlighted consumers' responsibilities when they purchase insurance policies and the recourse consumers have when they have a dispute with their financial institutions. This seminar attracted a total of 120 participants.

5) MoneySENSE and You - Are you making
effective financial decisions? (English and Mandarin) |
Organizers: Association of Financial Advisers (AFA), Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS), Insurance and Financial Practitioners Association of Singapore (IFPAS) and Central Singapore Community Development Council (CSCDC)
This was the first series of financial planning talks held in May and June 2004 at various community clubs within the Central Singapore district. The talks were well received, and the participants were educated on what they should look out for before making any financial commitment. Practical tips on how to evaluate any financial solutions recommended to them were offered to equip them with the necessary skills to make effective financial decisions. This series of financial planning talks were replicated in Mandarin at several community clubs within the Central Singapore district.

6) Protecting Yourself With Life
Insurance (Mandarin) |
Organizers: Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA) and Central Singapore Community Development Council (CSCDC)
Following the overwhelming response of the inaugural life insurance seminar and in response to participants' request to replicate the seminar in Mandarin, LIA and CSCDC jointly organised the first Mandarin seminar on 16 June 2004 at Grassroots Club. The seminar gave an introduction on the basics of life insurance and highlighted the importance of life insurance in financial planning. About 200 participants attended this seminar.

7) PRAXIS workshops for schools |

Organizer: Central Singapore Community Development Council (CSCDC)
The PRAXIS (PDF, 1.00MB) workshops were conducted successfully at 15 secondary schools within the Central Singapore District, such as Outram Secondary School, St.Theresa's Convent and Raffles Girls' School, from April to June 2004. PRAXIS consists of a financial board game covering topics on basic money management, financial planning and investments. The programme was carried out by a combination of game play, teaching and discussions to improve participants' financial literacy, and gave them a head start to acquire sound values and financial management skills. 1200 students benefited from the programme.

8 Management Skit - "Money Matters.
Family Matters."

Organizers: Central SingaporeCommunity Development Council (CSCDC), Ministry of Community Development and Sports (MCDS), Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board, Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS), in partnership with the National Library Board (NLB)
This was a series of 20 entertaining and informative interactive skits on basic money management performed from October to December 2003. Delivered in English mixed with local dialect, the skit focused on two families, the Lims and the Tans, and how they managed their household expenses. Held at various community centres and libraries, the skits also imparted basic concepts such as budgeting and debt management.

9) Protecting Yourself with Life Insurance (English)

Organizers: Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA) and Central Singapore Community Development Council (CSCDC)
This was the inaugural MoneySENSE seminar organised by LIA and CSCDC on 14 December 2003 at the HDB Hub Auditorium. The seminar gave an introduction on the basics of life insurance and highlighted the importance of life insurance in financial planning. Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Community Development and Sports and MP for Jalan Besar GRC was the guest-of-honour at the seminar. The 300 participants appreciated the seminar and requested for it to be held at a more regular basis. There were also requests for the seminar to be replicated in other languages, especially in Mandarin.

North East District
Organizer: North East Community Development Council (NECDC) and Planners Hub
"Talking Dollar and Sense" was targeted at residents of NECDC who needed help in managing their finances. Held from April to September 2004, the programme equipped participants with basic money management skills such as saving and budgeting in order to improve their financial well-being and motivate them to take charge of their financial future. The programme was carried out over three days, and comprised of a training workshop and two monthly follow-up sessions. Financial advisors were on hand to help participants understand the financial concepts taught and to guide them in developing their own plans to better manage their money.
At the graduation ceremony for the first batch of "Talking Dollar and Sense" participants held on 14 May 2005 at the NECDC Conference room , Dr Ong Seh Hong, MP for Aljunied GRC, said 700 residents who had participated in the workshop have not only gained financial budget skills, but have also helped themselves out of financial difficulties.

South East District

1) MoneySENSE@ South East |
Organizer: South East Community Development Council (SECDC)
Launched on 23 May 2004, MoneySENSE @ South East aimed to provide homemakers and working adults within the South East district with basic knowledge and skills on financial planning, budgeting, retirement planning and debt management through a series of skits and talks. The talks were conducted in both English and Mandarin to cater to the needs of the audience, and the highlight of the programme was an interactive money management skit (PDF, 4.41MB) "1 man and 3 ladies". This was a month-long event which attracted more than 400 participants. Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Marine Parade GRC, officiated the launch of the event.

South West District
1) Smart Money Management Workshops for Schools
Organizers: Credit Education Singapore (CES) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic
Supported by: South West Community Development Council (SWCDC)
The Smart Money Management workshops were conducted successfully at 3 secondary schools within the South West District from May to November 2004. These schools include Bukit Batok Secondary, Kent Ridge Secondary and Shuqun Secondary. Smart Money Management consists of a workshop where students are taught basic money management concepts such as credit, budgeting and savings through interactive games, quizzes, discussions and collages. This programme serves to provide a basic foundation for students to acquire sound values and basic money management skills. 672 students benefited from the programme.

Organizers: MoneySENSE in collaboration with the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), Association of Financial Advisers (AFA), Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS), Insurance and Financial Practitioners Association of Singapore (IFPAS), Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS) and Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA)
MoneySENSE collaborated with the major financial industry associations to launch a MoneySENSE Family Outreach at Parco Bugis Junction on 13 November 2004. This event was held in conjunction with Family Festival 2004 in support of the International Year of the Family. Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Minister of State for Finance and Transport officiated the launch. The programme consisted of a series of fun-filled activities including the following:

Launch of "The MoneySENSE Guide To Planning For Your Family's Financial Future" booklet;

"Saving For My Family" MoneySENSE Children's Art Contest;

The programme received overwhelming response with over 60,000 copies of the two newly-launched booklets picked up by the public over two weekends.

2) Practical Money Skills for Life
Organizers: The Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), Visa International and Singapore Management University (SMU)
"Practical Money Skills for Life" was a 2-day workshop held from 8 - 9 September 2004 at SMU to train 44 teachers from various schools including the 16 junior colleges, centralised institute and the 6 Integrated Programme (IP) schools. The workshop trained teachers in the delivery of basic money management concepts to their students. The materials provided also served as an additional resource for teachers to tap on to educate their students. This programme was the first "Train the Trainer" course supported by MoneySENSE.
